May 2020 Letter from Dr. Sakurai
May 18, 2020
Aloha Kaʻōhao School ‘Ohana,
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your continued support and patience during these challenging times. All of you have been simply amazing over these past two months. What we are able to accomplish together is simply remarkable. This has been truly the equivalent of trying to build a plane, while we are flying it, through a turbulent hurricane.
This past Wednesday I had the opportunity to share the fine work of our students, parents, teachers, and staff during this campus closure through a zoom virtual keynote at the annual Florida Association of School Administrators Conference. They were thoroughly impressed by the effort, planning and resilience put forth by everyone to make distance learning work at Kaʻōhao School. Kudos to all of you.
Even as Oahu businesses begin to reopen, school campuses remain closed at this time. As we finish this school year and prepare for the next one we want to make sure we continue to do our best to protect everyone in our school community. Here are some important announcements and reminders.
Trimester 3 Grades and Promotion
As a reminder in this time of enrichment, no grades will be entered for the third trimester. Students will be advanced to the next grade level unless previous arrangements were made.
We will be gathering belongings and distributing to students when we are allowed to have all of our faculty and staff back on campus to help return items back to students. Returning students will receive their items when campus reopens. 6th graders and non–returning students will be contacted for distribution either through their new school or by pick–up.
Ms. Kristi has been working hard to finish our yearbooks. They are currently being printed and will be available shortly. We will notify you of times and procedures on a drive by pickup to receive your child’s yearbook.
Summer Brain Exercises K-5 teachers are sending suggested summer enrichment activities to help prepare your child for the upcoming school year. Google Classroom and a host of our online platforms such as IXL will be open to continue student enrichment.
If you have borrowed an iPad from the school and are returning next year please continue to use and take good care of them to access our online platforms during the summer. For 6th graders and non–returning students please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange for the collection of devices.
Next School Year – Future Planning
Safety continues to be our number one priority. We know that the world is changing quickly with new information being introduced daily. As of this writing we do not have any official guidance on when schools will be allowed to be reopened. I am in communication with state and national school leaders and we are working on multiple scenarios on what we may do to continue educating students in the fall. What we anticipate is that learning will continue to look very different than what we are used to, including the possibility of continued remote learning or a mix of remote and in–person learning. Please be on the lookout later this week for a Kaʻōhao School Future Planning Survey in a separate email. We will be working around the clock over the next few months to finalize our Kaʻōhao School plan that will safely meet the needs of our students.
Our teachers are putting the finishing touches on the final lessons of our school year. We are all deeply saddened that it is coming to a close under these circumstances but are hopeful for what lies in store for the future. We will continue to keep you updated with the latest news as we proceed through the summer. Thank you again for your patience during this time. It is only possible to reach this milestone together as a strong ‘ohana. Please stay safe!
