The Governing Board of Kaʻōhao School is thrilled to announce that Kristen Hanaoka has agreed to accept the leadership position of Interim Director until a new School Director is hired. Once the new Director is in place, Ms. Hanaoka will stay in an administrative leadership role for the remainder of the 2022-2023 school year, facilitating a smooth transition.
Ms. Hanaoka’s unique combination of experience and knowledge make her a clear choice for this role. One of Kaʻōhao School’s longest serving educators, she has worked at Kaʻōhao School for over 21 years.
Ms. Hanaoka received her Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood/elementary education from Chaminade University and her Masters in Curriculum Studies from the University of Hawaii. She began her career in education with the first 7 years teaching as a Montessori preschool teacher in Honolulu. In 2001 she transitioned to Kaʻōhao School in Kailua, where she taught grades kindergarten, first, second, and fourth.
Last year she transitioned out of the classroom into the role of Curriculum Coordinator which has been a rewarding challenge and part of her continued growth as an education professional. During the past year she helped develop an initial RTI (response to intervention) program, planned and delivered professional development for staff, assisted in the SBA testing, served as a grade level chair, worked the daily lunch distribution, tutored students, researched curriculum programs, and assisted teachers with their curriculum needs, amongst a host of other duties. She found this new role to be professionally rewarding.
On a personal note, she has an amazingly talented husband who enjoys woodworking in his spare time and who has made some beautiful pieces for their home. Ms. Hanaoka personally enjoys crafting of all types, cooking, and taking her fur baby Quincy on long walks around their neighborhood. She has two wonderful grown sons with the oldest in the banking industry who still lives close by, while her other son is serving our country in the Navy and is currently stationed in Italy.
In her tenure at Kaʻōhao School, Ms. Hanaoka has built relationships with the faculty and staff. She brings with her an understanding of the Kaʻōhao ʻOhana and their expectations. Ms. Hanaoka has excellent interpersonal and communication skills, time management and organizational skills. All traits that will no doubt help her succeed in this time of transition.
One of the unique qualities of Kaʻōhao School is the community of teachers, faculty, parents and keiki who are so supportive. We are confident that you will all welcome Ms. Hanaoka in this new leadership role and give her all the support she will need for success.
