Possession of a high school diploma (or equivalent) which demonstrates the ability to read, comprehend and apply written directions, a high degree of verbal skill and the ability to perform basic mathematical computations, including percentages and averages.
Current certification from a course that includes hands-on practice such as those provided in-person by the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association. Certification from a course that is online only will not be acceptable.
- Current certification in child and adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Current certification in first aid
One (1) year of continuous work experience which involved children and adults. The work experience must have demonstrated the ability to work independently with minimal supervision; follow oral and written instructions; prepare simple reports; and communicate effectively.
Tuberculosis clearance issued within one (1) year of the initial application date.
Employee background check
Completion of the Department’s fingerprinting and criminal history background check will be required prior to entry into the Substitute School Health Assistant (SHA) pool.
The Substitute SHA will:
Maintain a clean, safe, organized health room
Provide first aid and emergency care to students at their assigned school
Administer physician prescribed and DOH approved routinely scheduled and/or emergency rescue medication for students who require the medication to be taken during the school day
Demonstrate proper procedures for students coming into and leaving the health room
Appropriately document health room activities and maintain student health records with or without the use of a computer and/or software applications
Protect and maintain the confidentiality of all student information
Be under the general administrative supervision of the School Principal, and is afforded clinical consultation with an assigned Department of Health (DOH) Public Health Nurse (PHN)
How to apply
Applications are valid for one year after the date of receipt by Ka’ōhao School.
- Completed Substitute School Health Assistant Application
- Proof of current certification in child and adult CPR from an in-person course
- Proof of current certification in first aid from an in-person course
- Proof of tuberculosis clearance issued within one (1) year of the initial application date
- Copy of a valid State ID

If the application and associated documentation demonstrates fulfillment of the minimum requirements, the applicant will be invited to attend the 5-day Substitute SHA training program. Upon satisfactory completion of the training, the applicant will be required to complete the Department’s fingerprinting and criminal history background check prior to entry into the Substitute SHA pool.
Flexible work day schedule is possible. Substitute SHAs work approximately 6.5 hours per day, Monday through Friday, except State holidays. Substitute SHAs are eligible to participate in the medical and prescription drug plans offered to part-time and temporary employees and the PTS Deferred Compensation Retirement Plan. Wages are subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes.
