Aloha Kaʻōhao ‘Ohana!
Welcome to the 2019-20 school year! I am so excited to be a part of such a wonderful school community. Kaʻōhao is a very special place with an amazing staff and awesome students. It is an honor to serve as your new director. I love Kailua and I am so glad to be back home in the community I grew up in.
As I began typing this letter I realized that this begins my 30th year as an educational leader in Hawaii, It’s been a pretty epic journey starting with the Windward District School Advisory Council, then to the Hawaii State Board of Education, serving as a teacher and now as a school administrator for the past 16 years.
I truly believe education is important to both the success of the individual and to our society as a whole. I want students to love learning and take away great memories of their time at Kaʻōhao. My role as a leader is to help create opportunities for our teachers and students to be successful. I help do that by building culture and leading learning where every child is valued and receives a high-quality education to thrive in an ever-changing global society.
This year for me will be a time of active listening and learning. I look forward to meeting and getting to know all of you over the next few months!
Winston Y. Sakurai, Ed.D
Kaʻōhao School Director
Aloha Kaʻōhao School Families and welcome to 2019-2020 school year!
For First to Sixth Graders, we will all meet for the first day of school on Friday, August 2, first bell is at 7:50, please look for your teachers in the assembly area.
For Kindergarteners, a separate email will be sent out to Kindergarten families to explain the schedule for our youngest learners and their staggered start times.
Before we get excited about the first day of school, we need to make sure everyone has our very important information. Class rosters will be posted on Wednesday, July 31, at 4 PM. On this day, from 4-6 PM, you can meet our parent group, Kaʻōhao School ʻOhana (KSO) Officers, and see how you can volunteer for school events and your child’s classrooms. KSO is our version of a PTA, but better because EVERY dollar goes towards the school to enrich their school experiences. We ask that each of our families find their passion and to get involved with our school events. Office staff will be able to take your payments anytime from 4-6 PM for the following: school supplies, remaining lunch balances, sign up for our lunch program, order your field trip shirts, and become a KSO (Kaʻōhao School ʻOhana) member!
After-school enrichment classes will be on-site to help you register your child/ren for the Fall.
Please plan on attending one of our mandatory parent orientation meetings on either Friday, August 2, or Monday, August 5 at 8 AM or Wednesday, August 7, at 6 PM to find out what is ahead for this school year and what volunteering opportunities are available for your family.
